For Christmas, the wife bought me a receiver for Sirius Satellite radio. When I first put it on my Christmas wish list, I pondered the merits of paying $12.95/mo to listen to something which is already free. I ultimately decided that I wanted it for the same reason most everyone pays for cable/satellite TV: you're paying for variety and more interesting content.
Installation of the unit was fairly easy. It's the first time I tried running wires under the plastic molding covers in my car. Not to difficult. Now comes the two big tests: how good is the content on Sirius and what's the quality of the sound?
I'll comment on the content later. The quality is unfortunately, not "100% digital" sound as advertised. The receiver acts as a mini FM broadcaster which sends a signal to your car radio. The quality of the sound is similar to an average FM broadcast (103.5 KOST, 106.7 KROQ, etc etc). I do hear occasional static. From what I've been reading, if you have a direct cable connection from the Satellite receiver to the radio, the quality will be much better.
Content. Most people, myself included, joined Sirius to listen to Howard Stern. Despite a few technical glitches, his first few shows have not disappointed and have made my morning commutes enjoyable. On the commute home, I've been flipping around and have found many things to listen to, ranging from old-school hip-hop, 80's new wave, uncensored comedians, and all NBA play-by-play broadcasts.
Overall, I give Sirius Satellite Radio, and the Sirius Sportster Replay receiver, an 8.5 out of 10. 1.5 points knocked off for average sound quality.
